What I did

When I took over, an outlier was handled by re-measuring until it looked right. The second reading always did, so three years of records had every anomaly quietly erased.

The new procedure keeps both readings and requires a written reason for the re-test. In the first month it emerged that 40% of anomalies came from our own unrinsed sampling containers.
