What I did

Every long shelf sags eventually. The usual answer is to hide a steel bar inside the timber, which works until it does not and then cannot be inspected.

Putting the spine on the outside is honest and about forty percent cheaper. It also gave the piece its only line of decoration, which was not the plan.
